Pastor’s Thoughts October 22nd, 2024

I had some thoughts while settling in to watch ‘The Game’ this week. It’s amazing how football has a way of bringing people together, and inspiring passion. It also, like every sport, can teach us valuable life lessons that extend far beyond the field.

One of the most beautiful aspects of football is the way it mirrors the journey of life. Just as a team works together to overcome challenges, we are reminded that we’re not meant to face life’s obstacles alone. In the body of Christ, we are called to lean on one another, to encourage, uplift, and support each other. Hebrews 10:24-25 encourages us to “spur one another on toward love and good deeds” and “not give up meeting together… but encourage one another.” Whether it’s on the field or in life, the power of unity is undeniable.

Football also teaches us perseverance. Every game has its moments of struggle, but victory often comes not from never falling, but from getting up again and again. In much the same way, our walk of faith requires resilience. We face challenges, setbacks, and even failures, but God promises to be with us through it all. Philippians 4:13 reminds us, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” No matter the scoreboard, our ultimate victory is secure in Christ.

The dedication of players who train, practice, and strive for their best serves as a reminder of how we, too, are called to give our best in life. Colossians 3:23 says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.” Football season can inspire us to approach life with the same determination, knowing that everything we do is an opportunity to honor God and reflect His love.

Finally, football reminds us of the joy of celebration. A touchdown, a hard-earned win, and the camaraderie of teammates all bring moments of joy and triumph. In life, we, too, are invited to celebrate the blessings, victories, and moments of grace that God gives us daily. Whether we’re in the midst of a winning season or a challenging one, we can find reasons to praise God for His goodness.

So as you cheer on your favorite team this season, remember the greater game we’re all a part of—the race of faith, where God is our ultimate coach, cheering us on to finish well. May this football season be filled with moments of joy, teamwork, and perseverance, as we’re reminded that life’s greatest victories come through faith, love, and trust in our Creator.
